Model History
The Land Rover Defender is an iconic British off-road vehicle renowned for its rugged durability and timeless design. Introduced in 1948 as the Land Rover Series I, it was developed to serve agricultural and military purposes, quickly earning a reputation for its robustness and versatility. The Series I was succeeded by the Series II in 1958 and the Series III in 1971, each bringing incremental improvements but retaining the core utilitarian design.
In 1983, the model was rebranded as the Land Rover 90 and 110, reflecting its wheelbase lengths in inches. The Defender name was officially adopted in 1990, coinciding with significant upgrades, including more refined interiors and more powerful engines, like the 200Tdi and later the 300Tdi diesel engines.
Throughout its production run, the Defender maintained its boxy silhouette and utilitarian ethos, becoming a beloved symbol of adventure and exploration. Its capabilities in harsh terrains, from deserts to jungles, earned it a loyal following among off-road enthusiasts and organisations requiring dependable 4x4 performance.
In 2016, Land Rover ended production of the original Defender after 68 years, marking the end of an era for this automotive legend. The final edition models, including the Adventure, Heritage, and Autobiography editions, paid homage to the Defender’s storied history.
The Defender's legacy as a durable and reliable vehicle continues to endure, making the limited number, later Defender Editions sought-after models for collectors, country and city daily drivers alike.
