A Defender with a rather more interesting story than most.
First registered in 1998 and acquired by its current owner in 2012, this 300Tdi began life as a traditional green hard top before being comprehensively reworked into the distinctive station wagon seen today.
The transformation included a galvanised replacement chassis by Charles Bennison 4x4, conversion to station wagon by Peter Marsh, a repaint in grey with contrasting white roof, BFGoodrich tyres on traditional steel wheels and a number of carefully chosen details.
For the past fourteen years it has formed part of a small collection belonging to John Mayhew, proprietor of Rules, London’s oldest restaurant, spending much of that time at his Lartington Estate in the Pennines.
The deer skull and wonderfully eccentric white Wellington boot are part of that story too, shared with its matching Defender 110, L17 LRO, which remains in John’s ownership.
With three owners from new, the L16 LRO registration included, and a fascinating collection of invoices and period photographs documenting its transformation and long-term ownership, this is a Defender with genuine provenance and character.
