Description
This 1973 Ford Capri Mk1 1600XL, presented in its original Sunset Red, has remained in the hands of one family since new, a remarkable three-generation ownership story that speaks to the care and continuity this car has enjoyed throughout its life. Accompanied by its original bill of sale and handbook, this facelifted Mk1 has always been dry stored and has never been modified, retaining the charm and character so often lost to time.
A rare survivor, this particular variant 'the 1600XL' is now believed to number fewer than 120 UK-registered examples still on the road (source: howmanyleft.co.uk). That makes it significantly rarer than some of its more famous Ford stablemates, including the Escort Mexico, which boasts over 670 licensed examples (source: howmanyleft.co.uk). While the Mexico commands strong values for its rally pedigree, the Capri 1600XL offers a stylish, understated charm and exceptional originality that’s becoming increasingly difficult to find.
In recent years, the car has undergone a light restoration, with paperwork to support the work carried out. Modern replacement components have been fitted sympathetically where necessary, including suspension, brakes, exhaust, and clutch, all within the past four years. Importantly, the car has always been maintained with original Ford parts where possible and has a clean MOT until Oct 2025.
A participant in the London to Brighton Classic Car Run on three occasions, it was once waved off by none other than Sir Stirling Moss. The sale may also include a selection of rare and original Ford spares, available by separate negotiation or inclusion, a valuable bonus for the next custodian of this increasingly uncommon model.
Model History
Unveiled in 1969, the Ford Capri was conceived as the European cousin to the Mustang, a stylish coupé accessible to the masses. Designed under the guidance of Philip T. Clark, the Capri quickly became a symbol of attainable performance, combining elegant fastback lines with dependable Ford mechanicals. The Mk1 was offered in a wide range of engine and trim configurations, from modest 1.3-litre variants up to fire-breathing V6s, all sharing the same sleek silhouette.
The 1600XL sat comfortably in the upper-middle tier of the range, combining Ford’s reliable 1.6-litre Kent OHC engine with improved interior finishes, chrome detailing, and a more refined driving experience. The facelifted Mk1s, introduced from late 1972, added revised lighting, updated bumpers, and other subtle refinements that kept the Capri fresh until the arrival of the Mk2. Survivors in original, unrestored condition, especially those with known provenance, are increasingly rare, making this example a standout opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
